Inspired by the traditional Japanese color “Futai” (二藍), these jeans reinterpret a historic purple hue created by combining indigo and safflower dyes. Dating back to the Heian period, this noble color was once reserved for the aristocracy and symbolized elegance, refinement, and status within Japan’s classical hierarchy.

Capturing the subtle depth of indigo alongside the vivid warmth of safflower, Studio D’Artisan recreates this cherished Japanese aesthetic through an original selvedge denim developed exclusively for the FUTA-AI series.

The warp yarns are dyed using a blend of natural indigo and madder, producing a deep, nuanced purple tone with the irregular shading and rich character unique to natural dyes. Both the warp and weft utilize textured 6-count slub yarns, giving the denim a rugged surface and pronounced vertical character.

Carefully woven on vintage power looms in Ibara City, Okayama Prefecture - one of Japan’s most renowned denim-producing regions - the fabric develops a heavyweight, substantial feel with exceptional texture and depth.
